CASE STUDY: Furnace Transformer

This transformer is used in the mining of metal ores, such as, copper and aluminium, by way of powering an electric furnace.

It’s a 3-phase transformer, which can be connected in multiple configurations with a primary voltage choice of 350V/380V/410V pulling 580 Amp, secondary output voltage of 27V and 7400 Amp max.
External contactors control the interconnection between the primary coils which can reconfigure from delta to a star (wye) connection, resulting in reduction of output voltage to approximately 58% for low power mode of the furnace heating elements.

The completed unit weighs in at around 3.1 Tonnes. The secondary is constructed from two parallel tinned copper bars, 160x6mm each, which allows for the great output current capacity at reasonable current density. These copper bars are bent and bolted to form 2 winding turns per coil and delta interconnected between the coils.

It is likely this transformer is used in the manufacture of copper conductors as used in the manufacture of similar transformers, thus completing the cycle.

The total manufacture time is around 2 weeks from start to finish once materials are sourced. We have worked closely with this customer for around 7 years and are investigating the manufacture of higher rated transformers for their product range.

Once the transformer is delivered to our customer, the transformer is fitted/connected to the water-cooled furnace, with the process taking around 26 weeks to complete. Following testing and commissioning, the system starts with initial gas supply to get the furnace up to temperature, electrical heating is then introduced to maintain the furnace temperature continuously, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.
