CASE STUDY: Scott-T Transformer

This is a Scott-T transformer as it’s wound using only 2 interconnected coils, enabling 3-phase input but single phase output. This arrangement results in more balanced loading as seen by the supply compared to a single phase transformer powered by two live lines only.

Primary voltage is 440V (300A) and a tapped secondary options of 45V/65V/85V with a max output of 1350A. This transformer is used to power a furnace for melting glass to create bottles for brands such as Budweiser and Coca Cola, and sold around the world.

Some of these larger furnace transformers such as this one are fitted with a thyristor stack providing voltage stabilisation and control, as some countries can see ±40V mains supply variation, unlike the UK which is maintained within a few Volts.

We have worked with this company for around 7 years and manufactured transformers ranging from as small as a few VA, up to 1000kVA.

This unit will also be fitted with primary MCB protection as part of our customer’s installation with their system, the secondary going on to the thyristor stack.
Larger transformers for this customer are also fitted with thermal alarm and trip switches for added protection, any overheating due to overload or a fault created by the transformer and/or customer’s equipment will warn operators before then cutting the supply to protect all equipment.
