Phase Transformers
-> Special Projects
In general Carroll & Meynell supply transformers
either as open style units for the customer to install
within their panel or as stand alone units enclosed
in one of our standard boxes. However we will also build
to order any transformer distribution product for special
applications. Such items in the past have included:-
Tunnel
Transformers
These are transformers in an IP55 sealed enclosure
that form part of a ‘daisy chain’ down the
tunnel on a 3.3kV supply. The enclosures are designed
to meet specific size restrictions so as to allow plant
and machinery to pass them in the tunnel while supplying
the power required in that section without overheating.
The transformer steps down the 3.3kV supply to power
a set of output sockets of various voltages and ratings,
415V 3 phase for motors and equipment, 240V single phase
for lighting and 110V CTE for workers power tools. All
of the sockets are fully protected by MCB/RCD devices
such that each transformer can act as a local distribution
board for its section of the tunnel.
Aviation 400Hz Transformers
In order to keep the size and weight of transformers
within reasonable limits the Aviation Industry operates
at a standard frequency of 400Hz. We can manufacture
transformers suitable for these applications utilizing
special low core loss lamination steels.

Mobile Power Supplies
These are transformers enclosed in steel boxes usually
with Appliance inlets or Plugs and protected output
sockets or couplers The units are mounted on rugged
castors so they can be towed around a site to deliver
power where required.
Volt Drop Compensation Transformers
These are transformer pairs for distributing power
over a long distance on a site. The first transformer
(commonly an autotransformer) is designed to step up
the voltage at the supply source to 1kV such that the
conductor size can be kept to a minimum without resorting
to the cost of HV cables. The second unit will be an
isolation transformer to step the voltage back down.
The primary to secondary voltage ratio of this transformer
will be designed to compensate for the drop in voltage
that has occurred along the cable.
Special Profile Transformers
In some applications size restrictions may dictate
that a standard transformer may have a dimension that
will not fit into the space available for the installation
e.g. a height or width restriction. In such cases special
designs geometries can be used to build a transformer
with a profile that will fit.
Military Units
We can build transformers to meet specific military
requirements. Weight and size restrictions for shipping,
IP ratings for outdoor usage, pressure release valves
for air freight in un-pressurized cargo compartments,
military sockets and connectors, military paint specifications.
