The wound products manufactured by Carroll & Meynell
Transformers Ltd are routinely varnish impregnated with
either a polyester resin or an epoxy resin. These resins
perform the primary function of reducing vibration within
the component to reduce acoustic noise levels. In addition
they also provide a level of environmental protection
against the effects of moisture and dust which can accumulate
on the surfaces. Moisture and dust on the surface of
the windings in particular can form conductive electrical
paths between various sections of the product acting
as means for electrical breakdown.
Within certain environments the effects of moisture
and dust can be more severe than those normally encountered
in moderate climates such as the UK experiences. Also
some environments may encourage the growth of mould
on the product surfaces or be subject to a build up
of salt.
Such environments are typically found in either tropical
regions or in maritime applications. In such circumstances
additional environmental protection may be provided
by the product being over-coated in a ‘Tropicalization
Resin’ following the normal resin impregnation.
This tropicalization coating provides an extra thickness
insulating resin layer which forms a thicker barrier
between the live electrical parts of the product and
any contaminants that may adhere to the surfaces. This
resin also includes a fungicide to inhibit the growth
of mould.
